The following information is beneficial to everyone involved in the process of Flood Elevation Certificates for flood insurance by providing more detailed informaion about them.
FEMA, in conjunction with the local government, Maricopa County or a local city, in charge of flood control, determines flood zones. The Land Surveyor provides the information, via the Flood Elevation Certificate form, which provides the data which determines the flood risk for your home or business. We cannot guarantee the Elevation Certificate will result in low insurance rates, we only provide the data that is required.
The limits of each flood zone are drawn on maps provided by FEMA. The different types of flood zones are listed below.
The Arizona Land Surveyor will search the FIRM Panels and determine what the Flood Zone is from that data. Based on a review of the Flood Elevation Certificates we have filed, there are 4 primary Flood Zones found here in Maricopa County, Arizona. They are Zone A, Zone AO, Zone AH and Zone AE.
Zone A - Maricopa County Arizona - The FEMA Flood Zone A defines an area which has at least a 1 percent annual chance of flooding but no detailed anylisis has been done to determine the actual Base Flood Elevation or depth
Zone AO - Maricopa County Arizona - The FEMA Flood Zone AO defines an area which has at least a 1 percent annual chance of shallow flooding of 3 feet or less in a large area with flowing water. There will be a Flood Depth given, most often being 1 foot, which has been calulated by a detailed analysis of the area
Zone AH - Maricopa County Arizona - The FEMA Flood Zone AH defines an area which has at least a 1 percent chance of shallow flooding in an area subject to ponding. There will be a Base Flood Elevation determined which is based on detailed calculations of the area.
Zone AE - Maricopa County Arizona - The FEMA Flood Zone AE defines an area which has at least a 1 percent chance of flooding, typically along a flowing stream. There will be Base Flood Elevations given along the flowing area and a calculation is made to determine the Base Flood Elevation at the location of the building.
